African-American History in Wyoming: Home

This guide contains resources about the African-American experience in Wyoming's history -- records include photos, documents, yearbooks, and oral histories. Some of these records are accessed online.
 

Warning, some of these records contain language in the form of derogatory slurs used about African-Americans common to the historical era.

• H95-20 Buffalo Soldiers collection—No original documents, all newspaper articles written about Black soldiers in war, mostly focusing on the 9th and 10th cavalries stationed at Fort D.A. Russel; One article is about black soldiers in the Civil War. Several articles highlight distinguished soldiers.

• H2011-60 African American Churches—A 123 year anniversary pamphlet
• Manuscript 705—George Montague: Tells about his career in the army before he settled in Laramie. His manuscript briefly mentions the 9th cavalry and Jim Bridger.
