CSLP Resources to Help New Youth Librarians Getting Started on the development and promotion of their Library Programming
Creating a successful library summer program can be a challenging task, but thankfully, there are resources available to help. The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) offers online tutorials that provide valuable tips and tricks for developing a tailored summer programming event schedule that meets the specific needs of your library. Moreover, if you want to create a more diverse range of activities that represent your community, you should consider watching the CSLP's inclusion training sessions. These presentations are specially designed to help you develop inclusive adventure programming that is representative of all attendees at your library. By utilizing these resources, you can create a fun and engaging summer program that your library patrons will love.
Creating library programming that appeals to teenagers and tweens can be a daunting task for youth and school librarians and library staff. However, professionals can increase teen engagement in libraries by taking into account the four key traits of adolescent development while creating their teen and tween programming, as suggested by the CSLP. This approach can help create library events that would cater to the needs and interests of the young audience and encourage their participation.
"Independence. By offering library cards and guaranteeing the confidentiality of the teen’s library usage, giving instruction in how to use library resources independently, and offering the opportunity to volunteer on projects for which they are responsible, the library gives teens chances to assert their independence.
Excitement. While in the past, libraries may not have been synonymous with excitement, new ideas in programming and young adult spaces can offer teens a great deal of stimulation.
Identity. Reading can help teens to discover possible futures for themselves. Therefore, a strong teen reader’s advisory program, complete with both fiction and nonfiction, can help teens fully explore their potential. Additionally, programs that help teens to share their interests with others can strengthen their self-esteem and give them opportunities to explore other possibilities.
Acceptance. When the library provides a space for teens, a positive experience, and a welcoming environment, it is acknowledging their worth."

Between 2017 and 2021, the Inclusive Internship Initiative (III) provided 198 high school students from diverse backgrounds with paid, mentored internships in 119 public libraries across 44 states. The program allowed students to gain practical experience in librarianship and discover ways to make a meaningful impact in their communities. Through the III, the Public Library Association (PLA) and participants developed a wealth of resources to support successful internship programs. For libraries interested in starting their own internship program, the PLA proudly offers the Inclusive Internship Toolkit: A Practical Guide for Teen Internships, available as a free download. This initiative is a testament to the power of inclusive programs that inspire and empower young people to make a difference in their communities.
