According to its creators, Citizen Science is a "participatory science, community science, crowdsourcing, public science, etc." According to the Scistarter website, their purpose is to create a space where "all curious and concerned people...can help solve local, regional, national, and global challenges." As partners of this year's "Adventure Begins" Theme, SciStarter has provided librarians with a Foundations of Science video tutorial, which will introduce them to Citizen Science and its application in the larger society. By the end of the training, they will also learn who can participate in Citizen Science, how to create a SciStarter account, and how to find and participate in a project. Once a library staff member has completed their training, they can train their users on how to use Citizen Science by creating a session using the facilitator's notes, available in PowerPoint, as a Word document, and a PDF file.
SciStarter has also created Libraries as Community Hubs for Citizen Science, a follow-up series of training modules developed for libraries interested in offering their patrons engaging community-focused STEM programming that would contribute to advancing medical science.
Another great planning tool for libraries to get their users is to register for SciStarter Live, a weekly live event where you can work through a project with SciStarter in real time. Everyone is welcome to join via their Facebook page or by clicking this link to register via zoom. Below are past zoom SciStarter Live sessions that can be of help as you prepare and promote relevant STEM programming in your libraries.
